Gillett Square Art Commissions 2009

In Clean Air We Fly

Dec 6th Gillett Square/Dec 7th - 11th Vortex Jazz Club

'In Clean Air We Fly' was the first audio installation to take place in Gillett Square and was created by Hackney-based artist Kaffe Matthews. The eight-channel electronic symphony was made with the input of young people from Colvestone and Shacklewell Primary Schools who took part in a series of workshops with the artist.

'In Clean Air We Fly' was part of curator Alice Sharp's Invisible Dust initiative, which brings together artists and scientists to consider issues surrounding air pollution, health and climate change.

The installation took place in Gillett Square during the day before the United Nations Climate Change conference opened in Copenhagen. The artwork was powered entirely by bicycles, with hundreds of people participating throughout the day, using a generating system provided by the creative ecologists Magnificent Revolution.

This project was produced by Hackney Co-operative Developments and commissioned by Invisible Dust. 'In Clean Air We Fly' was supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, Hackney Council and the Wellcome Trust.
