An audience of over two hundred people gathered in the square as it buzzed with over 60 Hackney-based dancers exploring the full possibilities of the site. Promenade-style performances incorporated the balconies, stage and central square.
The event was produced in collaboration with East London Dance and was funded by London Borough of Hackney’s Cultural Development Team. Local hip-hop dance artists Avant Garde, headed by innovative dance artist Tony Adigun, took curatorial control of the day and shaped a unique finale incorporating all the performers and the whole square.
East London Dance’s ‘Generation XYZ’, a performance group with members ranging from 65 to 94, took us through a musical dance journey from Jimmy Hendrix to Cuban salsa. The Definitives dance group, representing Hackney’s young dancers, exploded into action with high octane contemporary street dance that flowed seamlessly into a piece of slick unison choreography performed by Avant Garde’s own twenty-five dancers and accompanied by live music from Breakbeat. Internationally acclaimed local new circus artists Mimbre emerged from an elastic installation and wove a narrative of human relationships with intricate acrobatics. C12 swung off the railings to familiar jazz standards whilst Conscious Rhythms evoked the vibe of a South African shebeen.

The event was funded by London Borough of Hackney and curated by East London Dance.
