The Dalston Culture House stands on the western flank of the new Gillett Square. It was formally launched on Tuesday 15 March 2005. This stunning four storey cultural centre and arts workspace was designed by Hawkins\Brown and includes many cutting edge features. The Dalston Culture House has figured prominently in numerous press articles as an exemplary catalyst for inner city regeneration and was short-listed for the Hackney Design awards in 2006. See Guardian review of 4 April 2005.
All its spaces are very versatile. On the ground floor Little Sardegna restaurant, which specialises in Sardinian and Spanish cuisine, opens directly onto Gillett Square and has an outdoor seating area. The first floor houses the world famous Vortex Jazz Club which opened on 19 May 2005 and has live music nightly. (see Vortex' own web site for further details)
The top two floors are studio space - now occupied by the well established therapeutic arts group Studio Upstairs and acclaimed fabric designers Circle Line.
The Dalston Culture House is already giving an exciting boost to the renaissance of Dalston and, together with other Hackney arts venues, is helping to build a strong arts presence in East London on a par with the attractions of the West End and Central London.
